Plants that grow in and around water can have an impact on the long-term health of our area lakes. For this reason, the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board completes aquatic plant surveys on Minneapolis lakes every two to three years. These surveys document the increase or decline in different species of aquatic plants.

Eurasian watermilfoil is a plant of special concern to our lakes. This non-native plant creates all kinds of problems when it invades the water. For detailed information on milfoil results and common milfoil problems, click the link below.

Harvesting is currently the best management option that the MPRB has to control Eurasian watermilfoil. The weed harvester removes plants that are in the top six feet of the water which allows for trouble-free boating and swimming. Harvesting of aquatic plants can only occur in the areas identified in the Minnesota DNR issued permit.

Once established, it can be managed but not eradicated. It has spread to almost every state in the US, where it grows into thick mats that can make lakes impenetrable for boats and swimmers. It can make it impossible for native plants to grow, affecting fish and wildlife. Yup, it’s Eurasian watermilfoil.

Homeowners and businesses on East and West Loon Lakes in Antioch Illinois formed a taxing district that raises $50,000 a year to maintain the lakes. Mike Clifton, president of the Loon Lakes Management Association along with other operators, run an aquatic weed harvester to mow the aquatic vegetation along the shoreline and around docks.
