During the 20th century, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, became a hub of human activity and commerce. Toxic chemicals, discarded animal hides, meatpacking offal and other waste were dumped into the connected Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic rivers with abandon, not to mention municipal sewage.

Now a coalition of government entities and advocates is launching an ambitious project to remove that sediment, then restore habitat, improve public access and spur commercial and residential development.

The Milwaukee River estuary – all three of the city’s rivers and its harbor – is designated one of 43 “Areas of Concern” around the Great Lakes, all eligible for federal dollars for sediment cleanup and habitat restoration. The Milwaukee cleanup is among the most ambitious of any of those projects undertaken or proposed, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that oversees the program.

A broken barrier this week caused a massive buildup of garbage on the Drina that has threatened Bosnia’s Visegrad dam.

Officials say that between 6,000 and 8,000 cubic meters of waste are pulled out of the river each year. At the Visegrad dam, efforts began to clear away the clogging garbage and to avoid potential damage to the power system.

Two Aquarius Systems’ Aquatic Trash Skimmer boats were deployed to remove floating materials from the Ganga River at Sangam, India. Plastic bags, bottles, cans, food packets and coconuts among other items are dumped in the river by humans.

The Trash Hunters removed about 20 tons of water materials without four hours. The plan is to put the machines into service for 8 – 10 hours each day so that the cleaning of the Ganga could be done effectively.

The river debris skimmer boats collect floating waste through conveyors, stores it on board and then travels to the shore to unload the waste which is then transported to the dumping site. The skimmer boats are fitted with paddle wheels that allow it to travel in the water and help to aerate the water by churning it up.

These boats a big investment by DC Water to reclaim our rivers. They will literally be pulling tons of trash out of the Anacostia and Potomac rivers as we continue to improve the health of each river while reacquainting our community with how beautiful – and important – these waterways are.

DC Water pioneered the skimmer boat cleaning process back in 1992. The program has been an enormous success, with 300-500 tons of trash removed from the waterways of the District of Columbia every year.

This adoption program requires just three days of personal, hands-on time annually and a commitment of no more than two years.

Businesses and community groups are being asked to volunteer for a first-ever “adopt-a-river” program in Wisconsin and remove trash along the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Kinnickinnic rivers and their tributaries, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District Executive Director Kevin Shafer said.

Garbage pollutes the water and degrades habitat for fish, birds and other wildlife, Shafer said.

The program works alongside the district’s 50-foot-long river skimmer. The skimmer, named Lynyrd Skymmr as a tribute to southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd in a 2011 contest, hit the water Tuesday for the first time this year under the command of Capt. Scott Cassavant.

His crews pull garbage, debris and navigation hazards out of the rivers near downtown.
