Algae blooms can be dangerous, but there is no system that captures the total picture of algal blooms in Wisconsin’s 15,000 lakes, according to a new study.
The analysis, which was conducted by the Environmental Working Group, showed that Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota all lack sufficient testing programs for cyanobacteria.
To allow for more data collection, residents should advocate for lawmakers to put more money in the budget for testing and tracking algae blooms. Without funding, nothing can be done to keep people safe or prevent new blooms.
