Harvesting is the Best Management Option to Control Milfoil

Harvesting aquatic milfoil and algae in Minnesota with HM-420 Harvester

Plants that grow in and around water can have an impact on the long-term health of our area lakes. For this reason, the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board completes aquatic plant surveys on Minneapolis lakes every two to three years. These surveys document the increase or decline in different species of aquatic plants.

Eurasian watermilfoil is a plant of special concern to our lakes. This non-native plant creates all kinds of problems when it invades the water. For detailed information on milfoil results and common milfoil problems, click the link below.

Harvesting is currently the best management option that the MPRB has to control Eurasian watermilfoil.  The weed harvester removes plants that are in the top six feet of the water which allows for trouble-free boating and swimming. Harvesting of aquatic plants can only occur in the areas identified in the Minnesota DNR issued permit.
