Case Study: Aquatic Weed Harvester Keeps "Green" Living from Extending into Lakes and Ponds

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

  • Private community offers wide open spaces, nature preserves and wooded areas
  • Over 120 acres of lakes and ponds
  • “Green” living community
  • Filamentous algae is taking over and grows in abundance in shallow water ponds
  • Floating on the surface water, algae impedes swimming, fishing and other recreation

Pond in Illinois after harvester removes filamentous algae.

PROJECT CHALLENGE

  • Ponds are small with narrow boat ramps
  • Collected material needs to be hauled to a dump site
  • Shallow ponds and lakes
  • Filamentous algae introduced to water by spores in tap water, rain or wind

THE SOLUTION

The EH-220 Harvester is one of the smallest weed harvesters. The harvesters narrow width and shallow draft allow it be launched in the shallow ponds.

Without a dump site along the edge of the ponds, the Harvester unloads into the TRC-12 Trailer Conveyor which hauls the algae to a local dump site.

The equipment was easily moved from pond to pond to collect the floating mats of filamentous algae.
