Lake George located at the southern end of the Adirondack Park in Upstate New York is among the clearest and cleanest large lakes in the World. Like many lakes, it has been impacted by invasive Eurasian milfoil. First discovered in 1986, milfoil has been managed over the past 30 years at a cost of over $5 million.
Until recently, hand-harvesting and matting have been used to control the milfoil, but The Lake George Park Commission applied for a permit to use aquatic herbicide in the lake; a lake that serves as the primary source of drinking water for surrounding communities and residents.
But the Lake George Association, Lake George Waterkeeper, the town of Hague and lakeside residents contend more research is needed about potential adverse impacts the chemical could have on the lake, and in a lawsuit filed last year, argued that the permitting process cut corners. A state Supreme Court judge has agreed.
